What's up with all these permissions? Here's what we ask for and why we ask for it.
App Location Services
This lets us determine where you are using your phone's GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular connections. We use this data determine when you're driving and analyze your trips, as well as to share your location with Family members. We generally refresh your location when you move a significant distance, so the battery impact of TrueMotion Family is minimal when you're not driving. When you are on a trip, we work hard to use the absolute minimum amount of battery power needed to accurately record your trip.
Motion & Fitness
We require the Motion Activity permission on phones with motion co-processors. This permission lets us save you a substantial amount of battery power, since we can use some motion data that your phone is already collecting via a specialized low-power processor, rather than using your phone's main processor to collect the same data. This also lets us make better determinations of when you're driving, which means we can spend less time using your phone's GPS, which is by far the biggest driver of battery consumption.
iOS 10 and lower vs iOS 11 and higher - new permission questions
If you run iOS 11 and higher you will see three options in terms of location sharing as opposed to two in the past.
The old options (iOS 10 and earlier versions):
- Don't Allow
The new options (iOS 11 and later versions):
- Only While Using the App
- Always Allow
- Don't Allow
It is important that you select the "Always Allow" option since the app runs in the background most of the time and with no proper permissions while in the background - it will not be able to record trips.
